i would like to take a moment to provide my perspective on my latest short video Lovers are in Each Other (see bottom of this page) . first of all it has its starting point based on the ghazal 1246 by Rumi
The minute I heard my first love story
I started looking for You, not knowing
how blind that was.
Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere.
They’re in each other all along.
many times on the internet we find the last two lines quoted and emphasized as what can be considered their romantic meaning . that is as two physical lovers meeting as soulmates . there is nothing wrong with that interpretation and it is a very wonderful thought . but the context i have decided to pursue for the video is of the spiritual Beloved and the lover which Rumi most often writes about in his ghazals (poems) .
since i am only basing my video’s narration on Rumi’s ghazal . i am also taking the liberty of adding further words between the first four lines and last two lines of the ghazal . the additional words are paraphrasing parts of the New Testament of the Bible . mostly from:
Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning comes out of the east, and shines even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
and again .
The kingdom of God comes not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
i might note that some versions of the Bible translate the original Greek word “in your midst” . but nowhere else is that word ever translated as such . also Jesus just said the kingdom is not observable and Jesus is standing right there . so “in your midst” makes no sense . it is not found in the physical sphere of observation but in another direction . within . inside the human frame where the spirit dwells .
Within this vessel the Eternal resounds, and the spring wells up.
Kabir says : “Listen to me, my friend ! My Beloved Lord is within.”
those who are worldly-bound and are content to wait around expecting to find the Lord floating in the physical sky to me have a very limited scope of spiritual understanding . there is no time nor distance between the lover and the Beloved . both are in the immediate NOW . there is no waiting for prophecies to be fulfilled nor events to occur before communing can take place . “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24) . it is not by clinging to our physical form that we approach the Divine Throne . but in our ethereal (celestial) form because “flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.” (I Corinthians 15:50) . real communion does not consist of some worldly (perishable) wine and bread which at best only symbolizes communion . real communion takes place heart to Heart and spirit to Spirit . and even eventually beyond the limitations of form all together . where two are one .
Rumi has also emphasized the point that the divine is to be found within rather than something that is observable on the outside: “this universe is not outside of you . look inside your self” (Rumi) . the lover is better off seeking and communing with the Beloved inside . there one finds that he/she has been entwined with the Beloved all along . “we have become One in such a way that i have become confused whether i am You or You are me” (Rumi) . separation is an illusion . the Beloved has been beckoning the lover for reunion . a reunion to end the ages of dark separation . though separation is an illusion . the lover has been trapped in such an illusion for ages . casting off the illusion of form . the lover can now exclaim: i am neither body nor soul for i belong to the Soul of my Beloved (Rumi) and now the Light is shining and it is time to awaken .
